Equipment:
Can you imagine having to wash clothes for 580 children with no electric washing machine? Many of the orphanages don't have one yet, or could use another one to keep up with the washing. Warm Clothes: Most orphanages don't have heating or cooling systems and even in the warmer provinces, it can get extremely cold and damp, especially at night. The children are normally bundled in seven or more layers of clothing, but sometimes have to be kept in their cribs to keep them warm. Most toddlers wear "split pants", as is the tradition for potty training in China, but the infants often need new diapers. We ask that you make a cash contribution for clothing, as opposed to the clothing itself. Why? Well, the orphanages often can't take used clothing, for fear of epidemics and diseases. Also, shipping and duty fees make it cost prohibitive. And, of course it is much more cost effective to purchase clothing in China, with the exchange rate of 8.26 yuan to the US dollar. Furniture and Bedding: One orphanage recently reported that the children's beds needed to be replaced, because worms had infested the wood. This is often a problem in warm, humid climates. Warm, quilted bedding must be replaced when it gets completely worn out. A Chance to Play: Floor mats would allow the kids to play on the floors, which are often concrete. Playroom or playground equipment has been donated to some, but not all of the orphanages. A safe, entertaining place to play and develop physical skills would be greatly appreciated. Developmental toys, coloring books and crayons, tape recorders and educational tapes (particularly for sight-impaired children), and craft materials for the older kids would bring some joy to these children's lives. Interim Foster Care Sponsorship: The General Fund can also be used to get the support for children in foster care started until a sponsor is found.
