News from our Volunteer Coordinator Judy Payne in Shanghai

Volunteer Judy Payne in Shanghai works hard raising funds and putting together shipments of equipment, clothing, bedding, towels, laundry soap, heaters, vitamins, medicines and toys for the orphanages.  By purchasing much needed items in China, she makes it possible to stretch every dollar contributed and greatly reduce obstacles, such as logistics and international shipping expenses.  She has also begun efforts to raise enough funds to start a library of books in each orphanage.

Shipments of Clothing, Bedding and Supplies for the Orphanages

Working with clothing manufacturers, shipping companies and contributors in China, volunteer Judy Payne is providing a huge amount of much needed clothing and supplies to the orphanages in the Jiangxi Province.

Judy shipped 38 boxes of clothes, milk powder, laundry soap, toys, books and heaters to the Xinyu Orphanage in March.

The person who provided an 8-ton truck and driver to deliver the 38 boxes of supplies to Xinyu generously agreed to ship 25 more boxes of toys and clothing, including warm coats for the upcoming winter months to the orphanage in Gao 'An.

Since some of the clothes are adult sizes, Judy has asked Amity which orphanages have elderly people as well as children.  In addition to the new clothes, we'll send gently worn clothing and toys.

Based on the number of jackets and coats that the clothing manufacturer is planning on donating this year, there should be enough to keep everybody at 6 of our orphanages warm.  Good work, Judy!

Libraries of Books for Children in the Orphanages

Judy is raising funds, purchasing wonderful children's books and distributing them to the orphanages.

Judy's son got his student council involved and they are funding enough books to start libraries in six orphanages!  Judy is starting by establishing libraries at the following orphanages in Jiujiang, Guixi, Yichun, Ganzhou, Nanchang and Ruijin.

We hope that by starting a small library of books in as many orphanages as possible, that it will become a tradition for adoptive parents to carry some with them when they go to receive their child.

Books in Mandarin could be used by anyone over the age of twenty, such as the Hugging Grannies, to provide "story hours" for groups of children.  And, books in Simplified Chinese would give the children a chance to build their own reading skills.

Team Knitting Project - Warm Sweaters for the Children

Recently, Judy coordinated a project to provide warm sweaters for the kids in the orphanages.  She procured enough yarn to make 50 sweaters and has enlisted the help of older people living in the Social Welfare Institute in Xinyu to knit sweaters to keep the children warm!

PLY, a 23 year old woman (below) who was disabled due to an accident, is helping us with the project to knit sweaters for the children who live in the Yujiang orphanage, where she resides.  Judy procured enough yarn to keep her busy for quite some time!

Please see our Orphanage Requests page for ongoing updates about PLY.  She's in the Yujiang Social Welfare Institute.

  Fund Raising Events in Shanghai

Judy has organized a number of fund raisers in Shanghai over the last few months including a morning coffee, school clothing drive and cooking classes.  The Bunko Dice Night charitable event was a success!   Funds were sent to Amity to put toward our Hugging Granny project in the Ruijin orphanage.
